Our First Citizens, Cllr and Mrs James Starkie, will be sporting chains of office rarely seen outside their security vaults on Saturday for Colne Commemorates… 1918.

Since 1974, the Mayor has worn the Pendle Pendant on the former Colne Borough Council’s Victorian chain. The Colne Pendant has languished inside its vault for much of the time since then.

The Mayoress of Pendle wears the former Colne Borough Council’s regalia only when she is in Colne. The very special Colne Mayoress’ Pendant contains the fabulous, four carat Birtwistle Diamond. This whopping diamond was donated to the town by Mr Peter Birtwistle, a native of Colne, who emigrated to Canada and died in 1927. He left his fortune to the town where he was born, though he never returned.

On Saturday, the Mayor will be wearing his chain of office exactly as his predecessor a century ago would have done.

We thank the Mayor for making this fitting tribute in honour of Colne Commemorates… 1918.
