COLNE TOWN Council has announced that this year will see its first Allotment Awards. Allotment holders across the town are being asked to contact Diane Morville, the new Allotment Officer, to enter.
Cllr. Jonathan Nixon, Chairman of the Town Council’s Allotment Committee, explained: “We want to give recognition to Colne’s hardworking allotment holders. Colne’s allotments are hidden jewels and the various sites are real communities. We want our allotment holders to dig deep – literally – before we send our judges round on 15th August.”
There are three categories and the Council’s judges will award prizes for:
- Best Allotment
- Most Productive
- Best Newcomer (allotment holder for fewer than three years from date of judging)
LBS has kindly sponsored these awards and is providing a trophy for the winner of the Best Allotment. The Town Council’s Allotment Committee is additionally awarding LBS vouchers to the green-fingered winners.
Anne Wolfenden, executive director of LBS Global, commented: “We leapt at the chance to sponsor these awards. As a local horticultural business, we are aware of the deep well of cultivation knowledge there is in Colne. Some of the town’s allotments are stupendous and deserve celebrating.”
The Town Council is hoping the awards attract lots of entries and is asking allotment holders to call in to its offices at the Town Hall (except on Friday afternoons) to enter, to telephone 01282 841599 or e-mail [email protected]. The deadline for entries is 17th July.
