PROTECTING OUR GREEN SPACES

Colne sits in some of the most beautiful countryside in Lancashire, if not the whole of the UK (we’re possibly biased!). We are also blessed with some fabulous green spaces within the Town itself, that we all enjoy.
Policy 7 of our Draft Plan lists 21 green spaces that our Working Group considered as valued Local Green Spaces.
The reason it is important to list green spaces is because Paragraph 76 of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) advises that “local communities through local and Neighbourhood Development Plans should be able to identify for special protection green areas of particular importance to them. By designating land as Local Green Space, communities will be able to rule out new development other than in “very special circumstances”.
Policy 13 is concerned with preserving valued landscapes and views. There are some iconic views in Colne, of Pendle Hill, of Boulsworth and of our own Town Hall with its majestic tower.
Policy 14 is all about protecting Colne’s relationship to its rural hinterland. It seeks to protect the rural character of isolated farms, hamlets and settlements like Lidgett and Bents.
